Home RepairDoes Your Home Need Repair?

The Home Repair for the Elderly Program is designed to provide minor home repairs to eligible low and moderate income elderly homeowners residing in the property, as well as accessibility modifications for disabled homeowners. Fairfax County will provide a crew to do up to one week’s labor and provide up to $500 in materials to complete necessary repairs and maintenance. Materials are paid for by County and Federal funds.

All materials and labor for the work done under this program are provided completely FREE OF CHARGE to eligible homeowners. 

 

Types of Repairs

Emergency work cannot be provided. The following is a list of the typical kinds of services that can be provided under this program:

  • Minor electrical repair

  • Window and door repair

  • Minor plumbing repair

  • Screen replacement for windows and doors

  • Gutter and downspout repair (two-story maximum; no gutter cleaning)

  • Installation of grab bars, hand railings and other accessibility devices

  • Repair or replacement of electric hot water heaters

More extensive improvements or those requiring building permits or licensing are not provided.
 

 

Eligibility

Homeowners meeting these qualifications are eligible to apply for the Home Repair Program:

  • Applicants must be residents of Fairfax County
     
  • They must own and reside in the home needing repair
     
  • Applicant must:
    • Be 62 years of age or older; OR
    • Have a disability; OR
    • Have family members residing within the home having a disability
       
  • Financial Eligibility:
    Persons in the Household Household Income Limit
    1 $55,750
    2 $63,700
    3 $71,650
    4 $79,600
    5 $86,000
    6 $92,350
    7 $98,750
    8 $105,100

    Note: We will ask about other family assets other than your home (e.g. savings accounts, rental properties, land, etc.). A percentage of assets valued at greater than $20,000 will be calculated as income towards your eligibility.

    Monthly housing costs (e.g. mortgage, home insurance, utilities and real estate taxes, etc.) must exceed 25% of your monthly household income. Note: Households with yearly income below $10,000 have no housing expense requirements.
